Corporate Financial Modeling and Valuation

Basic corporate valuation usually relies on the creation of a dynamic discounted cash flow model. Building one from a blank worksheet, using someone else’s, or trying to manipulate one that is already created is difficult without a thorough knowledge of technical spreadsheet skills and financial concepts. This course provides participants with a thorough understanding of every component needed to build and use a powerful discounted cash flow model. In addition, major concepts are expanded upon to ensure that the assumptions being used are correct and the modeling is completed in the most accurate fashion.

Learning valuation and modeling is best done with a combination of theory, demonstration and hands-on practice; each section below is designed in such a way. Almost all exercises are Excel based and contribute to understanding a fully functioning, dynamic model. The following models will be reviewed and included in the course:

  • Basic Corporate Finance Model
  • Advanced Corporate Finance Model
  • Data Stratification Tool

VBA Programming for Finance

As innovation in finance develops and transactions become more complex they require a level of analysis that surpasses the ability of a standard spreadsheet program and necessitate the implementation of computer programming. The most effective way of harnessing the power of programming for finance is to learn Visual Basic Applications (VBA) within the context of relevant problems.

This course will take participants through the basics of working in VBA’s integrated development environment to ultimately writing intermediate level code that can be used to amortize thousands of loans or run powerful simulations.

Investing in Distressed Securities

This workshop teaches participants how to analyze and evaluate distressed securities. Whether from a defensive point of view where one currently owns a distressed security or from an offensive point of view where one is trying to capitalize on dislocated prices, the skills and techniques taught in this course are invaluable. Given the vast amount of distressed asset backed securities, the course uses those assets as a primary theme. Other distressed analyses include single name corporate exposure, pooled corporate exposure and distressed asset pools.

Reverse Engineering Transactions

Reverse engineering is the process of decomposing existing work so that underlying assumptions, mechanics and functionality are understood. While primarily an engineering and software concept, reverse engineering is applicable to finance when one wants to understand a pre-existing deal. Reverse engineering financial transactions is used by investors to understand the deal they are committing money to, by banks and other entities trying to understand their competition, by third party data providers and in many specialty cases – such as model validation.

This course shows participants how to translate Wall Street deal documents into a dynamic model by breaking down complex legal wording and constructing formulas that translate the meaning of the words. Strategies for efficiently working through lengthy documents are shown, while intricately worded legal statements and definitions are explained in a simple manner and demonstrated in working models. Participants will work with actual deal documents and a completely reversed deal, to understand all aspects from creation to validation and eventually to interpretation.
